Pichi Richi Railway

Travel Guide - Pichi Richi Railway offers a unique way to experience the beauty of the Flinders Ranges, just four hours' drive from Adelaide, South Australia. Operating between Quorn and Port Augusta, the narrow gauge railway was built in the 1870's, and is the last remaining operating portion of the famous Ghan railway. Trains use steam locomotives or historic diesels and genuine timber-body carriages up to 115 years old. A variety of hire options are available to meet your requirements, with trips ranging from two to six hours. Departing from Port Augusta visitors traverse a wide-open plain, watching as the Ranges grow closer, eventually enveloping the line. Travel past Redgum lined creek beds, saltbush-studded hills and rocky outcrops before arriving at Quorn, the historic capital of the Flinders Ranges. A shorter trip from Quorn to Woolshed Flat (return) travels through the timeless Pichi Richi Pass, with its deep rock cuttings, superb stone wall embankments and spectacular iron bridges. The volunteers of the Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society have progressively restored and operated the railway as a working museum for the last 40 years.
